AI Fluency: Foundations

Understand generative AI and use it safely and well with ETA's ADAPT framework

About this course

Generative AI is now part of everyday work in almost every field. This course gives you a clear, practical foundation: what these tools actually do, where they help, where they fail, and how to use them safely and well with ETA's ADAPT framework (Assess, Direct, Assure, Protect, Tune).

What you'll learn

  • How large language models produce text, and why they can sound confident and still be wrong
  • The three ways of working with AI: Ask, Partner and Assign
  • Where AI helps at work today, with examples from manufacturing, healthcare administration, government, small business, education, finance, marketing and IT
  • How to decide whether a task suits AI, write a clear brief, check output before you use it, protect sensitive data and keep improving
  • A complete, end-to-end ADAPT workflow you can repeat on your own tasks

Who it's for

Working adults in any role or sector who are new to AI or have only tried it casually. No technical background is needed. You will need access to an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini or your organization's approved tool for the hands-on exercises.

How it works

Two modules, about 60 minutes in total, with a hands-on Try it exercise in every lesson, take-away job aids, a knowledge check at the end of each module and a final assessment. Score 80% or higher on the final assessment to complete the course (1 credit hour). This course, together with AI Agents at Work: Foundations, counts toward the ETA AI Empowered Professional: Foundations credential.
